Functions of Urban Development Department (UD-2)
Urban Local Governance and Municipal Administration
- Administration, supervision, and coordination of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) including Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, and Nagar Panchayats.
- Strengthening municipal governance systems and institutional capacity through the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA).
- Implementation of municipal administration reforms and governance initiatives.
Urban Infrastructure Development
Planning, development, and monitoring of urban infrastructure projects.
Improvement of civic amenities including:
- Water supply
- Sewerage and sanitation
- Solid waste management
- Roads and street lighting
- Public health infrastructure
- Urban environmental services
Urban Planning and Development
- Promotion of planned and sustainable urban growth.
- Coordination with statutory planning and development authorities including Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT).
- Support for housing, area development, town planning, and urban redevelopment initiatives
Fire Prevention and Emergency Services
- Administration and coordination of Maharashtra Fire & Emergency Services.
- Enforcement of fire prevention and life safety measures.
- Strengthening fire safety systems, emergency preparedness, rescue operations, and disaster response mechanisms.
Implementation of Government Schemes and Reforms
- Implementation and monitoring of State and Central Government urban development schemes and missions.
- Promotion of urban reforms, municipal finance reforms, and capacity-building initiatives.
E-Governance and Digital Transformation
- Promotion of technology-driven governance and digital service delivery systems in Urban Local Bodies.
- Development and implementation of e-governance initiatives for efficient urban administration.
Policy Formulation and Regulatory Functions
- Formulation of policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines related to urban development and municipal governance.
- Administration of Acts and statutory provisions pertaining to urban local governance and fire safety.
Financial Management and Institutional Support
- Allocation, monitoring, and utilization of grants and development funds for Urban Local Bodies and associated agencies.
- Strengthening institutional frameworks and administrative systems for effective urban governance.
Capacity Building and Training
- Capacity building of municipal officials, technical staff, and fire service personnel.
- Promotion of best practices, professional training, and administrative modernization.
Citizen Welfare and Urban Quality of Life
- Ensuring efficient delivery of civic services and improved urban living conditions.
- Promoting safe, inclusive, resilient, and citizen-centric urban development across Maharashtra.
