
Swachha Bharat Mission – Urban






Overview
The Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM-U),was launched on 2nd October 2014 aimed at making urban India free from open defecation and achieving 100% scientific management of municipal solid waste in 4,041 statutory towns in the country.
The second phase of SBM-U was launched on 1st October 2021, for a period of 5 years (till October 2026) The vision for SBM-U 2.0 is to achieve “Garbage Free” status for all cities by 2026 and institutionalizing ‘Swachh’ behavior amongst the citizens.
SBM–U 2.0 will be implemented by MoHUA through States/ UTs in all statutory towns (as per Census 2011, and statutory towns added subsequent to that).
The Government of India in partnership with States/ UTs and ULBs is committed to make all cities ‘Garbage Free’ under SBM-Urban 2.0 to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030, which will ultimately improve the quality of life and ease of living of urban populations, thus leading to urban transformation

- Vision

- The mission is in force since 2021, covering all Statutory Towns in India under the Mission.
Sustainable Solid Waste Management
Key components
- Setting up of waste processing facilities such as MRF's, transfer stations,composting plants,bio methanation plants,RDF processing facilities,Plastic waste processing facilities,waste to electricity,sanitary landfill,etc
- Procuring mechanized sweeping equipment and setting up processing facilities for effective management of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste (in 154 cities)
- Bio-remediation / capping of all legacy dumpsites in all ULB's
Sustainable Sanitation
Key components
- Construction of Individual Household Latrines (IHHL)
- Construction of Community and Public Toilet (CT and PT) seats
- Construction of urinals, along with retrofitting of unsanitary toilets
- Aspirational toilets ULBs will have to provide additional PTs in all tourist destinations/ places with high footfall/ iconic cities/ religious destinations
Used Water Management
Key components
- Setting up of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) / STP-cum-FSTP
- Laying Interception and Diversion (I&D)
- Procuring adequate numbers of septic tank desludging equipments
IEC / BCC
Key components
- National level support for agencies, campaign management, promotion of national level initiatives, and advocacy
- State/ ULB level support for campaign management, onboarding of grassroots organisations, promotion of good practices, and events
